AI-Generated Puzzles vs Photo Puzzles: Which Should You Choose?

Published October 1, 2026; updated October 1, 2026

Choose a puzzle created with AI when you want to invent a picture from an idea. Choose a photo-upload puzzle when the gift needs to show a particular photograph. The important difference is where the picture comes from: a description you write or an image you already have.

Smizzy creates puzzle artwork from a written description and an art direction. Its puzzle generator does not accept photo, logo or artwork uploads. This guide explains when that approach fits your gift and what to check before ordering.

Start with the picture you want to give

Two ways to make a personal puzzle. Photo-upload options depend on the service you choose.
Your goalWhich approach fits?
Invent a sceneAI artwork lets you describe a setting, subject and visual style that do not need to exist in a photograph.
Use a specific family, pet or holiday photoChoose a photo-upload service. Describing someone or something to an AI generator does not reliably reproduce their exact appearance.
Choose an existing illustrationBrowse ready-made designs if you would rather select a finished picture than create one.

For example, a puzzle of your actual wedding photograph needs a photo-upload workflow. A fantasy castle full of cats can begin with a written idea. Smizzy also offers ready-made jigsaw puzzles.

Make the subject personal, then choose its look

Think about the recipient's interests, favorite places and sense of humor. Combine a clear subject with a setting and a few meaningful details. A personal theme does not need to be a portrait.

A cozy mountain cabin with two orange cats, a shelf of mystery novels and wildflowers outside the window. Warm evening light, storybook illustration, no lettering.

This is a suggested starting prompt, not the recorded prompt for the example below. In the supplied unicorn-and-puppy example, clay and stained-glass art directions give the subject different textures and shapes.

Clay-style puppy riding a rainbow-maned unicorn beside a lighthouse at sunset
Clay direction: rounded forms and a modeled texture.
Stained-glass-style unicorn and puppy with colorful coastal sunset panels
Stained glass direction: strong outlines and distinct color areas.

Look for details you will enjoy assembling. Recognizable objects and varied colors provide visual clues; large areas of similar sky, water or repeating texture can be more demanding. Art direction alone does not determine difficulty, so inspect the actual picture.

Choose piece count and finished size together

Think about the recipient's puzzle experience, preferred challenge and available table space. A lower piece count may suit a shorter project; a higher count asks you to work with more pieces. The image itself still matters. Piece count is not an age or safety rating.

Smizzy's supported puzzle formats are listed below. Check the generator for current availability and price.

Smizzy puzzle sizes, all in landscape orientation.
PiecesFinished size
3010" × 8"
11010" × 8"
25214" × 11"
50021" × 15.5"
1,00030" × 20"
2,00040" × 28"

Switching among available piece counts does not require new artwork. Recheck the framing after each change because the proportions can differ. Keep faces, wording and important objects inside the safe-area guide. The seam preview is a simulation; the manufactured cut pattern can differ.

Check the artwork and what comes with it

Inspect faces, animals, lettering and small details before ordering. AI can produce mistakes, and an edit can affect more than the detail you asked to change. Screen colors and the physical print can also differ.

Each Smizzy custom puzzle includes a white metal tin printed with the finished artwork. For a photo-upload puzzle from another service, check its own packaging, image-resolution requirements and crop preview rather than assuming the same options apply.

The step-by-step puzzle walkthrough shows the full example, including the physical puzzle and printed tin, plus the current generation, editing and ordering controls.

Before buying a puzzle as a gift

  • Review the current item price and shipping total for the selected piece count and quantity. Creating artwork and purchasing the physical puzzle are separate steps; check the displayed generation allowance or credit cost.
  • Check the delivery address and shipping estimates. Smizzy currently ships to US addresses, and production and transit estimates are not guaranteed arrival dates.
  • Read the Return & Refund Policy before buying a made-to-order item.
  • If you want to return to a Smizzy design later, sign in and save a draft. An account is needed for puzzle saving and sharing; guest checkout is supported.

If an imagined scene fits your gift, start your puzzle artwork. If you want an existing design, browse ready-made puzzles.
